Academician Raul V. Fabella is National Scientist

Academician Raul V. Fabella, an outstanding economist, is the newest to join the esteemed group of National Scientists in the country. The Order of National Scientist is the highest honor that the Philippine Government can bestow on a Filipino scientist for his or her outstanding contributions to science and technology. Dr. Fabella is recognized for his pioneering works on novel analytic constructs which turn out to be useful for problems in economics. His introduction of subsymmetric sets resulted in extending the reach of the celebrated Nash bargaining solution to more egalitarian (Rawlsian) grounds. He also proposed the Olson ratio which enriches the rent-seeking paradigm, and derived and applied the debt-adjusted real exchange rate which enlarges the pool of relevant indicators for exchange rate policy. 

NAST 33rd Annual Scientific Meeting

The National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), Philippines held its 33rd Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) on July 13 and 14, 2011 at the Manila Hotel. Revolving Around the theme Meeting the Challenges of Agricultural Productivity, Competitiveness, and Sustainability, this year’s ASM follows up and builds upon Philippine Agriculture 2020, a strategic plan developed out of a series of consultations and workshops convened by the Academy among the various stakeholders of the agriculture and fisheries sector.

 Academician Leopoldo S. Castillo, 89

Academician Leopoldo Sanchez Castillo, a renowned Filipino expert in the field of animal science  joined his creator on Friday (July 15) at the age of 89 years.

The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST, Phl), the country’s highest recognition and advisory body on issues concerning science and technology, joins the scientific community in mourning the demise of Acd. Castillo, who was chiefly recognized for his works on the development of the livestock and poultry industries in the field of animal nutrition and management.

 Resolution on Meeting the Challenge

     Whereas,  the majority of Filipinos specifically in the countryside are heavily dependent on agriculture, accounting for about 14% of the gross domestic product, 6-8 percent of exports and 37% of employment;

     Whereas, the science community, led by the National  Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), Philippines, recognizing the pivotal role of modernizing agriculture in achieving the national development goals of poverty alleviation, global competitiveness,  food security and sustainability has crafted  a medium term strategic plan for agriculture and natural resources entitled Philippine Agriculture 2020 (PA  2020) ;
