Philippine Water 2050 was the theme of the 34th Annual Scientific Meeting of the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL), primary adviser to the Philippine government on S & T related matters held on July 11-12, 2012 at the Manila Hotel. This year’s ASM aimed to provide analyses and science-based solutions/policy recommendations to the government, the private sector and society at large on the modernization and improvement of water sources and delivery for domestic, agricultural, industrial and other uses, and the sustainable development of Philippine water resources. |

The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) held a Round Table Discussion (RTD) on Water-Borne Diseases on May 10, 2012 at the Hyatt Hotel and Casino Manila. Sponsored by the NAST Health Sciences Division, Department of Science and Technology and AGHAM Partylist, the RTD centered on factors related to the quality of water, their effect on the human body and to local and national initiatives and policies. |

MAJOR ISSUES ON QUALITY OF BOTTLED WATER |

Several issues dealing with the quality of commercial bottled water were raised in a technical forum sponsored by the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) and Kapisanang Kimika ng Pilipinas (KKP) during the Philippine Chemistry Congress last April 13, 2012 at EDSA-Shangrila Hotel, Metro Manila. Ms. Maria Theresa Cerbolles of FDA- DOH and Dr. Veronica Migo of BIOTECH-U.P. Los Banos presented technical papers at the forum which was organized by Acd. Ernesto J. del Rosario of NAST and UPLB and moderated by Dr. Eric Punzalan of DLSU. |

NAST PHL conducts RTD on Universal Health Care |

In support of the universal healthcare program of the government, the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) initiated a roundtable discussion (RTD) on universal health care at Hyatt Hotel Manila on 21 February 2012. This RTD is a follow up to the NAST-sponsored 2010 RTD during which the University Health Care Study Group of UP Manila presented the concept and the implied reforms in six health sectors should UHC system be adopted by the newly elected government of President Benigno S. Aquino III. Unsurprisingly, universal health care became the health agenda of the current administration and is now officially referred to as Kalusugan Pangkalahatan or KP. |

NAST to hold Environmental Science awarding ceremony and Talent Search for Young Scientists (TSYS) Finals on April 23 |

On April 23, 2012, the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST Phl) will hold the awarding ceremony of the NAST-Hugh Greenwood Environmental Science Award and the presentation of finalists for the NAST Talent Search for Young Scientists at Hyatt Hotel and Casino Manila. The said event will be participated by various sectors including the academe, the media, and the scientific community. To give messages in this ceremony are Sec. Mario G. Montejo of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Sec. Ramon J. Paje of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and Acd. Emil Q. Javier (President) of NAST. |
